Training Volunteers to Set Up Drum Baffles Safely
Drum Baffles are simple to set up, but a little training goes a long way when volunteers are involved. Always mount your baffles on sturdy cymbal stands using the 7/16‑inch grommet that comes standard. Have one person hold the stand while another slides the disc onto the post; this prevents accidental drops and keeps the cast acrylic edge from chipping. Once the baffle is in place, angle it toward the cymbal so that it reflects sound away from vocalists and other musicians.
Teach volunteers to adjust height and orientation for each instrument. A 23‑inch baffle should sit just above the hi‑hat cymbal to shield its splash without touching it, while a 30‑inch baffle behind a ride or crash should be high enough to catch the cymbal’s primary blast. Encourage your team to always move slowly and use both hands, as the panels are durable but not indestructible. Properly installed baffles protect the band and audience from high‑frequency “hash” and allow the drummer to remain fully engaged with the group.
