Cymbal Dampeners
Price: $9.99 USD
Cymbal Dampeners are black circular foam pieces with non-permanent 3M adhesive. They are designed to shorten cymbal decay—the length of time a crash or hit continues to ring—so you can work toward a tighter cymbal sound without replacing the cymbal. The foam acts on the cymbal itself rather than placing a barrier between the kit and surrounding microphones.
Start with one or two dampeners per cymbal, applied to the underside near the bell. Listen to the cymbal after placement and compare the length of the crash and the remaining ring with the undampened sound. Begin with a small amount of damping so you can judge the change in decay and tone before deciding whether your setup needs more. The set contains six dampeners, allowing you to start with a few cymbals and compare the result during rehearsal.
These foam dampeners differ from stand-mounted cast-acrylic Drum Baffles. A baffle is a separate circular disc positioned to redirect direct cymbal sound away from nearby microphones and musicians; a dampener is attached underneath the cymbal to affect how long it rings. They address different parts of a drum setup and can be considered separately when working on cymbal decay, microphone placement, and stage balance. Results depend on the cymbal and placement: damping is not a guarantee that all ring or microphone spill will disappear.
