How to Choose the Right Drum Baffle Size

Choose the smallest disc that safely interrupts the cymbal path you need to control. A 23-inch baffle is a compact starting point for a hi-hat or splash position. A 30-inch baffle offers broader coverage around a ride or crash, but it also needs a more stable stand and more protected storage. Neither size is automatically right for every kit.

Ask four questions

Which cymbal is reaching the nearby microphone or musician?
How much room is available around the stand?
Can the stand support the disc without wobbling?
Will the disc fit your storage and transport plan?

Match the size to the job

Start with 23 inches when the target is compact and the stage is crowded. Consider 30 inches when a larger cymbal has direct spill around the edges of a smaller disc. Keep clearance around moving cymbals and never rest a baffle on the kit. The installation guide shows the safe setup sequence.
